Newman Regional Health offers innovative sonic pressure to help with cardiac health and peripheral artery disease

Members of the W.S. & E.C. Jones Cardiovascular Lab announced that they are now offering an innovative treatment option for patients with certain coronary and peripheral artery issues. Utilizing a new technology, the treatment approach uses sonic pressure waves to safely treat problematic calcium in the coronary and peripheral arteries that can reduce blood flow in the heart and extremities.

“The cardiology team at Newman Regional Health is committed to giving our patients access to the latest cardiovascular innovations to treat heart disease,” said Dr. Michael Lloyd, Cardiologist. “Empowered by this novel shockwave IVL technology, we are excited to be treating some of the most complex forms of heart disease in our most challenging patient cases, all while remaining committed to improving patient outcomes.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women.  Each year, almost 700,000 people in the United States die of heart disease. About 30 percent of older patients have problematic calcium that increases their risk for adverse events.

“The new shockwave technology, known as intravascular lithotripsy or IVL, allows physicians to fracture the problematic calcium – using sonic pressure waves – so that the artery can be safely expanded, and blood flow is restored through the placement of a stent with minimal complications. Physicians can treat longer segments too.”

James Crump, Director Imaging and Cardiovascular Lab says, “We have a mission to provide continuous quality improvement and this new technology and procedures will benefit patients whose arteries are rigid and more difficult to reopen with conventional treatments. Locally, several patients each year will be able to undergo Shockwave procedures in Emporia whereas previously they would have had to seek treatment out of town.”

Newman Regional Health’s Cardiovascular Lab is the first and currently only, American College of Cardiology PCI Accredited lab in Kansas.

About Shockwave Medical: Shockwave Medical (NASDAQ: SWAV) is a public medical device since its IPO in March of 2019; it is headquartered in Santa Clara, California.  The company was co-founded in 2009 by Daniel Hawkins and John Adams, who adapted lithotripsy for the treatment of kidney stones to create the cardiovascular application.  CEO Doug Godshall joined Shockwave in May 2017 to lead the company into U.S. commercialization and international expansion of IVL, which is now available in more than 50 countries.  Shockwave Medical is the first to use lithotripsy to fracture calcium in the artery. The approach was approved by the FDA in September of 2016 for its use in peripheral artery disease, and approved by the FDA in February of 2021 for the treatment of coronary artery disease.
